It is impossible to travel throughout the Willamette Valley of Oregon and not see new hazelnut plantings around every turn.  This once cottage industry is now well into an exponential growth phase of new acres of highly productive varieties that, in turn, are establishing Oregon as a major hazelnut growing region on a global scale.  Not only is Oregon drawing attention for the increase in volume, but we are recognized for maintaining our superior quality because of our modern farming and processing technology.

This rapid growth, however, led to a number of bottlenecks within the industry. New disease resistant varieties, modern planting techniques, and improved cultural practices have solved challenges as the industry has evolved. We now find ourselves in a situation where vast quantities of green hazelnuts are flooding the existing undersized and antiquated wash and dry plants in the region. This is a challenging segment of the supply chain for producers to upsize as there are no turn-key, commercially produced, and proven full wash plant solutions available in Oregon.

Enter K&D Systems.  Taking generations of drying experience, coupled with modern drafting, engineering, fabrication, and production capabilities available, we are now able to offer a number of full-plant solutions.  These products are proven within our own facility, K&D Receiving, located in Albany, Oregon.  With our own real-life, full scale, and operational plant, we are able to provide our customers with systems we guarantee work, the first time.  Equally important to the machinery, K&D is also able to provide start-up assistance and guidance to our customers.

Decades of Experience

Barney and Andrew Kropf

The Kropf family has been farming in the Willamette Valley for generations. Traditionally grass seed production and custom cleaning had been the focus, but with new generations growing older they diversified into growing hazelnuts and built two wash/dry facilities to create more work and income.  Operating wash/dry facilities for over a decade has really complimented the farming operation and opened the farm to such a special industry. Many lessons have been learned through the development and operation of two wash/dry facilities and the Kropf family looks forward to sharing their experiences with others interested in developing a new or existing plant.

The Denfeld family has been involved with growing and processing hazelnuts in Oregon for over 70 years. The family currently operates several complementary divisions: a farming division that includes about 1,000 acres of orchard; a processing division that purchases crop from over 100 growers up and down the Willamette valley; and a Specialty Nut manufacturing group, Laurel Foods, that creates value-added products, many from our delicious Oregon hazelnuts. This extensive experience and involvement in all areas of the hazelnut supply chain provide support and knowledge to the development of K&D Systems.
